Today I took my students (who split their time between my art class and a breakdance class) on a field trip to the Landmark Century theater to see this Planet B-Boy film, which is a documentary that goes inside the international underground breakdance scene in Japan, France, South Korea, and the US as these crews prepare for the biggest event of their lives: The Battle of the Year in Germany.

Even if you aren't a breakdancer (like me) its definitely a film worth seeing and something that anyone can appreciate. It took a really interesting look into the lives of these dancers that all come from different backgrounds but have hip-hop in common and a ridiculous passion for b-boying as an art form.

Besides, it's only playing in about 20 theaters in all of the US and is only screening in Chicago til the 17th of April...

Kraft has decided to invest a hundred million dollars into the idea of frozen bagel sticks that are filled with cream cheese aka what looks to me like a Twinkie twinsie. If I ever get to the point where I: a) am physically incapable of taking a knife and smearing Philadelphia onto my bagel or b) think that I am "too busy" to take 2, maybe 3 minutes tops out of my morning to prepare said bagel, smack me across my face, straighten my fat ass out..or just simply kick me off my high horse. Although this idea seems completely ridiculous, I don't find myself too shocked. We are officially in the age of PB & J Uncrustables, Lunchables and Go-Gurts.

Everyday that Tennille and I go to eat at my favorite Mexican restaurant, El Faro....we get hooked the fuck up by our all-time FAVORITE waiter, Ricky. Either he'll bring us free flan, free pastel de tres leches or free faro cake. On top of that, hes always super on point about bringing our food out fast, unlike anyone else there. So now, we get fed for free. And he insists it ain't him who hooks it up, but that there's some secret admirer person who keeps paying our food.

Charles and Ray Eames: Powers of 10

I seen this super short film a few years back by Charles & Ray Eames, a couple of crazy designers who were actually a married couple (Ray being the wife) and were HUGE contributors to the design field... aka architecture, industrial design, furniture design, graphic design, and even film. Most of the work is familiar to anybody, and you've most likely seen their designs before without knowing it, since many still influence modern furniture today, but we don't always know about the artists behind these everyday objects. An architect friend of mine got me obsessed with them years ago, but I was just looking them up again today for some reason.
They were such a cool, powerful, and creative couple....

So this short documentary called Powers of 10, done in 1977, depicts the relative scale of the universe in factors of ten....
It sounds smart, right? Well watch it, because it's actually good.
And of course, it starts off in Chicago....

When I was 10, I had a unibrow, my hair was always in a braid, I was always wearing sweatpants and I was apparently a huge fan of those Keds slip ons. I always wore Looney Tunes, Chicago Bulls and "Bum Equipment" (do you remember that brand?) clothing, too. Take a quick look at the picture above. The LAST thing on your girl's mind was anything mani, pedi, and spa-related. I just wanted to play sports, hang out with Kyle Balmer (Nicole Bachta, I hear you too)..and eat. It wasn't even until my Highschool days that I got into the waxing, threading, dermatologist, and overall beauty game. So seriously, what is this world coming to? I guess there's a pampering craze among 9-10 year olds that I was completely unaware of until now.

Spring Break: I forgot how to blog and how to party.

Some people spend their Spring Break on a beach, sipping a couple two, three or thirteen margaritas with their best friends. Jamaica? Sure. Cancun? I got you. I don't know the specifics, so I might have to ask AB about what REALLY goes down during this time. Dude knows how to party. Me? I have no clue. This is what Ive been doing these past few days, though:

Changing my oil - Check. I hate doing this, let's not talk about it until the next 3,000 miles are up, ok?
Baking/eating brownies- Check. Duh?
Watching "The Office"-Check. Because this is my shit right here. Who do I identify with most? Kelly, of course. Oh, and Dwight Schrute.
Searching for a Spring trenchcoat- Check. I know, I didn't think I was going to find it so fast, but I did, out of nowhere, while returning some shirt. Thanks H&M, 60 bucks.
Dropping off dry cleaning- Check. I never want to see my Winter coat again..at least until next year sometime.
Missing a call from my boss-Check. Because sidekicks are the most unreliable phones and my ass didn't wake up until 11:00am anyway.
Sippin' Ethiopian coffee-Check. A white dude made it for me.
Shopping at Target-Check, almost. I plan on doing this after I'm done with this quick post and after my hair dries.

All this and it's only been a few days. Lord knows what might happen throughout the week. It might get a little crazy. Just warning you.

PS. I'll be in New York May 11th to May 18th because my best friend is getting her masters from NYU. The ceremony is at Madison Square Garden. Am I the only one that thinks this is crazy? Other plans include getting banana pudding from that cupcake shop that's a block away from Alife and that iced coffee from the small Italian place in Brooklyn.

So why's it snowing like the freakin blizzard of '79? I'm genuinely tired as hell of this and I for damn sure ain't the only one. I just worked my ass off finishing up my winter quarter at school with strizaight A's, and all I want is to enjoy a spring vacation.....instead we get treated with a fresh 6-inched coat of snow. Not surprisingly, it's bad enough out there to cancel 350 flights at O'Hare and back up traffic for hours. But the snows supposed to stop at 1am tonight and by tomorrow it should be 40some degrees. Still not enough to make me happy.

Nico B and the Record Playas (Boom Bap from Chicago):
After Nico B, an emcee based out of Chicago, sent me an email with a couple of his tracks attached, I did a quick search on google while I was waiting for the songs to download to find out a little bit about him. The profile on his record label's website placed a strong emphasis on his Cuban background and the fact that he had been performing in Brazil, rapping in a bilingual mix of English and Portuguese. When I finally got a chance to listen to his music, I expected to hear something similar to Reggaeton or the type of Favela-inspired sound that M.I.A. cashed in on a couple of years ago. I must confess that I've never been a huge fan of either genre, so I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out that I was way off-base, as the songs were unquestionably hip hop in its traditional form.

Contrary to my initial expectations, Nico B, hailing from the largely Hispanic suburb of Cicero, IL, seems to have been influenced much more by the neighboring city of Chicago and its brand of hip hop. The two songs that Nico sent me feature him rapping over beats that have a fair amount of boom bap to them, with some great production provided by the Record Playas. Give 'em a listen:

Special shoutout to the California Milk Processor Board for creating this incredibly informative (and entertaining) commercial regarding monthly visitors, mood swings and dairy. Apparently if a woman drinks a glass of milk a day, she is less likely to be a crazy w(b)itch during her special time of the month. Wait, what? This sounds like a guerrilla scare tactic that Moms use on their young girls to get them to drink that nasty white drink. Did the Cali Board do their research? I'm pretty positive that Hispanics (whom this commercial is obviously geared toward) are way more likely to be lactose intolerant than their white counterparts. (Check the specifics here.) The only evidence that would support their claim would have to be my case. Have I secretly been followed around? 1. I hate milk and don't drink it. 2. I drink soy milk every day 3. I'm a complete w(b)itch during Aunt Flo's visit..and the week before..which really only leaves two normal weeks out of the month, but that's irrelevant. So, unless I'm just the exception, preach Cali Board..and thank you for enlightening me on my attitude problem.

At designer Marc Jacobs's party last week, Thurston Moore told us that Sonic Youth are preparing to launch an art show, which they hope will travel the world over a number of years, including a stop in New York. "We're putting together this museum show that's utilizing all the artists that we've worked with on different covers and concepts, and that's going to happen for two or three years," said Moore, after the band played "Kool Thing" at Jacobs's request. "It's going to happen in young museums, there's one outside of Paris, there's one in Malmö, Sweden," he added.

The show is expected to kick off in June at LiFE (Lieu international des Formes Emergentes) in Saint-Nazaire, featuring works from artists who have collaborated with Sonic Youth over the course of their 26-year career. "It's going to be a lot of artwork by a lot of artists that we've worked with through the years, people like Chris Wool, Dan Graham, Vito Acconci.” Not only will works of art be on display, but the band plans to perform at each location. As the band is starting to write their new album this spring, according to Moore, art fans may even get a sneak preview.

A location for the show in New York has yet to be confirmed, Moore says, but at least one museum is already attracted to the project — or else Moore's trying to attract its attention. "I think the Whitney is somewhat interested," he said, "but it’s all about scheduling." —Fiona Byrn

There is always a battle going on inside my head about John Legend. One minute, I think dude is good looking..the next minute, not so much. As of right now, March 6, 2008 at 8pm, my mind is telling me that he is damn sexy. In grade school, my friends and I would play this game called "Which animal do you resemble the most?" General consensus was that I resembled a koala. I can totally see it too and that's fine. I just work with what I got, ya know? I'm bringing this up because if I played the same "animal" game with John (first name basis), I would definitely say that he also resembles a koala. Twinsies? Maybe.

Earlier in the week, I came across an article in the New York Post regarding a mini 3-hour vacay that Starbucks went on from 5:30pm-8:30pm on Tuesday (peep the article here). Two people were interviewed and from their responses, I could've swore that something earth-shattering had just occurred. Did the world's water supply suddenly diminish, leaving us with no way to hydrate ourselves? For many people (including myself), coffee holds the same importance as water..so this may actually have been the case. Let me focus on the article though. I personally feel that the highlight lies within these quotes:

"What am I supposed to do, make it myself? I am shocked. Shocked and appalled," fumed NYU student Mallory Drew, 18, at the always-packed Lafayette Street and Astor Place location.

Alba Morales, 22, a student at BMCC, noted, "A lot of people come here to make out, read, sleep. I can't imagine how lost people will be tomorrow."

Do they allow coffee makers in the NYU dorms? I could dip into Mallory's quote a little more, but I feel like her helplessness/spoiled demeanor is self-explanatory. I'm not going to hate though. Go on, girl..freak out all you want. I sometimes don't feel like making my coffee at 6am either. Wasn't this in the late afternoon though? Way different circumstances. Anyway, let me get to Morales. Two thoughts, or questions rather, popped into my head after reading dude's quote. "Is making out in Starbucks just an NY thing because I'm pretty sure this doesnt happen in Chicago..but if it does, where are these locations at?" was the first question... followed by, "Are you fucking kidding me?" Morales (and my girl, Mallory) HAD to have known that their words were going to end up in print for thousands of people to read..so why would they say something so ridiculous/borderline ignorant?

Who the hell am I to judge, though. Let me dig deep into the Bernal archives for a minute, specifically August 26, 2006. I was in Brooklyn with my best friend Jessi and we were on the hunt for both black and brown versions of the Gucci fannypack (before they became so readily available.) A woman from The New York Times approached us and asked for our opinion regarding the whole "Morning- After pill Controversy"..whether or not it should be available over the counter, if we had any previous experiences with it, etc. etc. Jessi was very general with her answers. I was not, of course, in true "Mica fashion." I literally told this woman my entire life story..or would that be sex-life story? I didn't take into account that she was a writer for yes...The New York Times and that she had the power to manipulate my words as she saw fit for her article. A few days later, Jessi receives a phone call from her mother regarding my new found celebrity status. Here's an excerpt from the article (in which your girl makes her debut) entitled, "Easier Access To Plan B Pill Evokes Praise, And Concern"

Micaela Bernal, 20, who was shopping in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn, said she had used the pill once before, but had to wait three hours at an emergency room to get it because the Planned Parenthood clinic was closed. The visit cost her $300 and she felt nauseated for nearly a month after taking the pill. Knowing a backup is available over the counter, she said, might make her more likely to have unprotected sex. ''Some girls are probably going to get careless,'' she said. ''If I didn't get so sick I would use it more often.''

My favorite line has to be the last, in which I'm basically proclaiming to the world that I would have way more promiscuous sex if I could legally pop the Morning-After pill like it was Tylenol and not have any side effects. The writer obviously misconstrued everything I told her...but maybe she didn't. I was definitely in my prime during those days.

In conclusion..

-Morales and Mallory: You can live without Starbucks and your caramel frappalappas for 3 hours...not hating, just saying.
-Everyone else: Next time you and your significant other make a "mistake" and have to run to Walgreens to buy the pill, you can thank me..one of the pioneering women whose (newspaper proclaimed) promiscuity made that option a reality.

Busy, busy, busy..which means E-slackin' on my part. This weather is also a drag too. When's the first day of Spring? When can I take my layer game down a notch..from 5 to 2? I'll even compromise and settle for 3 layers, counting my coat. Anyway, hopefully this picture of a bright, young and outstanding woman will hold over some DONTBECHI readers until I come back. She's a 24 year old UIC (holler) student who is currently being held at 75,000 bond and if convicted, can face up to 3 years in prison. Instead of going into details about what she did (which can be read here), I'll just say this: If you are going to send out an "anonymous" E-mail to students telling them that you are going to go into a shooting rampage at school in the Spring, follow these 2 tips:

1. Don't write the E-threat in a public place such as the school computer lab.
2. Don't sign in using your own school ID number.

Valentine's Day. A quick rundown of gifts I've gotten throughout the years on this (not so) special holiday. Grammar school: I don't know, a few cards here and there..probably some chocolate from Kyle Balmer. Highschool: Hi, I attended an all girl's Catholic academy. It was filled with a ton of anorexic, lesbian coke addicts, but I'll save that story for a rainy day. Anyway, this holiday was a HUGE deal during this time and you weren't shit unless your boyfriend had candy, stuffed animals and flowers delivered while you were sitting in class. Of course my high-maintenance ass had my man at the moment deliver all three of these items and then some to me. This was essential. Fast forward to more recent years. Other random items include, more chocolate, more cards, a sprinkle of mix CD's, a diamond encrusted Wu-Tang watch (no joke), and sex. Let's elaborate about sex for a minute. How many people in this great big world of ours will be doing the dirty dirty today/tonight? While walking to class today, I notice that more couples were holding hands than on any other given day, so that ratio can be translated to sex, right? Is this google-able? Of course I tried. I didn't find exactly what I was looking for, but I did however, find this:
